March 26, 2012: Nicon Gems in collaboration with BRECAN brought breast cancer awareness and healthy living to their home base, Nicon town, Lekki, Lagos State. A lovely neigbourhood, I thought I was in Springfield New Jersey, USA where my son once lived. If Nigerians can live like this, decent and orderly, who says we can’t build a better Nigeria. It was semi-formal talk with me, Founder/President of BRECAN and Lilian Adesokan, BRECAN PRO and also CEO Dichefit Fitness as resource persons.
My talk centred on the the urgent need for every woman to be breast aware noting that many Nigerian women were dying mostly due to ignorance and false beliefs about what causes breast cancer and how it could be treated. It was emphasised that awareness was about being aware of the disease, knowing and practising breast self examination and presenting any unusual signs to a doctor without delay. I also reiterated the mantra that “early detection saves lives” drawing on my personal experience as a survivor of 15 years and still counting. Dichefit Fitness expert talked about the role of healthy living in cancer prevention. The women were advised to cultivate the habit of eating balanced diet and exercising as well as promoting the same healthy life style in their homes. By all account the talk was inspiring, engaging and very interactive.
With nearly 30 women in attendance, each completed a survey on the knowledge and practice of breast self examination (BSE) which is critical for every woman to take charge of her breast health. The women were engaged in the practical demonstration of BSE and it was a lot of fun. It is important to mention that prior to the talk and out of curiousity, a call was made for the women to signify having the knowledge of and practised BSE. Surprisingly, only 3 women knew and practised BSE, a clear indication that the neighourhood approach has the potential of accelerating our reach and providing breast cancer education to a greater number of women, one group at a time. In line with the promotion of energy balanced diet, the hostess Ngozi Ekwebelem entertained us with assorted healthy sumptuous dishes.
