NATIONAL
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is set to commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day in SEVEN states (Lagos, Oyo, Abuja, Imo, Ondo, Enugu and Kogi) across Nigeria.
We aim to sensitize more than a million persons on Cancer Prevention and Lifestyle as we commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Our Strategies:
- Sensitize 5000 people across Nigeria through seminars and outreaches
- Send Cancer IEC materials to another 10,000 persons via mails.
- Reach out to 1 million persons through social media sponsored advertisement.
Our Social Media Campaign on Cancer:
Our social Media Campaign will be focused on National Coverage of Human Papillomavirus Vaccine.

A Brief on BRECAN:
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is a leading non-governmental organisation galvanising action against breast cancer in Nigeria. The NGO which was founded in 1997 has improved the lives of many Nigerians touched by Breast Cancer, who would have succumbed to the disease due to ignorance and lack of support. Although our focus lies on awareness, support and advocacy with respect to breast cancer, nonetheless, we take advantage of our breast cancer awareness platform to sensitize the public on other forms of cancer.
The World Cancer Day (WCD) is one of many well-structured programs we conduct every year. We have consistently marked WCD since 2007 in different parts of Nigeria. Our success stories over the years have attracted both corporate organisations and government agencies to join patriots working tirelessly to ensure cancer case fatality drops to zero in our beloved country, Nigeria.
IMO
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) Imo Chapter have called a town hall meeting on cancer in Owerri to mark the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Town Hall on Cancer
We aim to sensitize and dialogue with 2000 individuals of various social strata (Market women, Clergies, Youth, Political office holders etc.) on the state of Cancer care in Owerri and the way forward.
Our Strategies:
- Organize an open discussion town hall meeting where community members birth and share ideas on how cancer care and management can be improved in Imo State
- Leverage on the presence of community stakeholders to reemphasize the need for promote Human Papillomavirus Vaccine

A Brief on BRECAN Imo Chapter:
The Imo Chapter of Breast Cancer Assocation of Nigeria (BRECAN) was formed and launched in 2008. Since her establishment, the Chapter has successfully galvanized individuals, peer groups, corporate organisations and political stakeholders to promote healthy lifestyle and support Cancer patients. However, we believe there is more to be achieved owing to current state of Cancer care in the state.
ENUGU
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) Enugu Chapter will participate in a Television program at the Enugu State Television to sensitize the general public on Cancer and its risk factors to mark the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Cancer and Risk Factors.
We aim to sensitize Enugu State Television viewers on the risk factors of the common forms of Cancer and emphasize the importance of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine.
Our Strategies:
- Sensitize 500 secondary school students in Lagos state through a day seminar
- Send Cancer IEC materials in form of letters to the 1000 adult.

A Brief on BRECAN Enugu Chapter
The Enugu state Chapter of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria began as a Breast Cancer Club at the Queens School Enugu. Some students of the school volunteered to participate in BRECAN activities and in 2016 the Chapter was officially launched.
Past World Cancer Day activities in Lagos
2016 – The Enugu Chapter organized a school based sensitization program at the Queens School to commemorate the 2016 World Cancer Day.
2017 – An inter-school competition was organized at the Queens School Enugu, with focus on cancer prevention and early detection.
ABUJA
The Abuja chapter of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is organizing a public lecture together with her launching and fundraising program to commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Together We Can Make a Difference
We aim to lecture 500 young adults from four secondary schools in Abuja to become healthy lifestyle ambassadors in their respective schools as we commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Our Strategies
- Sensitize 500 secondary school students in Abuja through a day public lecture
- Make the participants ambassadors in their various schools in order to sensitize many other teenagers and young adults in the Federal Capital Territory.

A Brief on BRECAN Abuja Chapter
In line with her vision to reduce to zero the case fatality of all common forms of cancer in every part of the country, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is set to stretch herself once again as she prepares to launch her Abuja Chapter while marking the World Cancer Day in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This will be the NGO’s first World Cancer Day celebration in the Federal Capital Territory and it promises to be remarkable.
KOGI
The Kogi State Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) will carry out a Cancer awareness outreach at one of the largest market in Kogi state to increase awareness and knowledge about Cancer, especially Breast cancer amongst women in commemoration of the 2018 world cancer day.
Theme: We Can; Inspire Action; Take Action
Knowing that women are the primary health care givers and a good proportion of them transact business in local markets, we therefore aim to promote healthy lifestyle and emphasize the importance of early detection and presentation of all forms of cancer amongst market women in order to promote family health.
Our Strategies:
- Sensitize 5000 market women, at the Felele market in Kogi state through talks, drama presentation and jingles.
- Provide Cancer IEC materials for the women.

A Brief on BRECAN Kogi Chapter:
The BRECAN Kogi State Chapter was established in the year 2017 and has since then been at the fore front in the war against cancer through its sensitization and awareness programs in the State.
OYO
The Oyo state chapter of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is delighted to join many individuals and organisations the world over to commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Healthy Lifestyle and Cancer
We aim to sensitize 500 teenagers and 1000 adult on Cancer Prevention and Lifestyle as we commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.

- Send Cancer IEC materials in form of letters to the 1000 adult.

A Brief on BRECAN Oyo Chapter:
The Oyo state chapter of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria is the pioneering chapter and houses the NGO’s national secretariat. It was established in 1997 and maintains till date, a vanguard position in promoting breast cancer awareness/advocacy programs in all nukes and crannies of Oyo State. As part of our entrenched commitment to eliminating cancer related deaths and improving the quality of life of cancer patients, we have commemorated the World Cancer Day every year from 2007 till date.
Past World Cancer Day Activities in Lagos:
2016 – The WCD for 2016 was marked in a secondary school – George and Duke College, Ibadan – on the 11th of February. A Cancer sensitization program was carried out among 500 students.
ONDO
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) Ondo Chapter is organising a programme for secondary school students from different schools in Akure for a lecture to increase awareness and knowledge about cancer, especially Breast Cancer to commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Healthy Lifestyle and Cancer
We aim to improve the cancer awareness level of the students and encourage them to become advocates of Cancer diseases among their peers, families and the community at large, thereby enhancing a positive attitudinal change in relation to Cancer.
Our Strategies
- Sensitize 500 secondary school students in Ondo state through a one day lecture
- Provide Cancer IEC materials for the students and materials in form of letters to the 1000 adult.

A Brief on BRECAN Ondo Chapter:
Ondo State Chapter was inaugurated in the year 2017. Although the Chapter is barely a year old, it has cancer advocacy to a whole different level in Ondo State and Nigeria at large. The chapter boasts of hosting the 3rd International Conference which saw more than 3000 indigenes of Ondo state, numerous international experts in the field of Cancer, and top-ranked political office holders
Past World Cancer Day activities in Ondo:
2017 – A seminar on cancer prevention with focus on healthy lifestyle and early detection was held at the BCG Events centre, Akure on the 4th of February to mark the 2017 World Cancer Day. 1500 women and girls from the 18 local governments in Ondo state were in attendance.
LAGOS
Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) Lagos Chapter in collaboration with Command Day Secondary School, Maryland, Lagos, is organizing a seminar for 1000 secondary school students to mark the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Theme: Healthy Lifestyle and Cancer
We aim to sensitize 1000 teenagers and young adults on Cancer Prevention and Lifestyle as we commemorate the 2018 World Cancer Day.
Our Strategies:
- Sensitize 1000 secondary school students in Lagos state through a day seminar
- Send Cancer IEC materials to the students’ parent/guardian.

A brief on BRECAN Lagos Chapter:
The Lagos Chapter of Breast Cancer Assocation of Nigeria (BRECAN) was formed and launched in 2017. Prior to the establishment of the Lagos Chapter, BRECAN has been conducting breast cancer awareness and advocacy programs in Lagos. In fact, as part of her activities to commemorate the World Cancer Day in 2015 and 2016, BRECAN organized cancer awareness seminar programs in Lagos based secondary schools.
Past World Cancer Day activities in Lagos:
2015 – BRECAN marked the World Cancer Day in Lagos by partnering with Landers 88 and Maryland Comprehensive College to organize the 1st Omolara Jolaoso Memorial Lecture which was tagged “Breast Cancer and Lifestyle”.
2016 – The 2nd Omolara Jolaoso Memorial Lecture which was tagged “Survival” was organized to commemorate the 2016 World Cancer Day on the 4th of February.
2017 – After years of executing cancer awareness/advocacy programs in Lagos, BRECAN finally announced her presence in Lagos by establishing the Lagos chapter while marking the 2017 World Cancer Day at the Police College Secondary School, Ikeja Lagos.
