Majority of women do not know how to carry out breast self examination – OAUTHC Ile-Ife medical team
It was revealed from medical screening exercises administered by the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (Nigeria) that majority of women who are aware of breast self examination do not know of the correct method of carrying it out. This observation was made during the just concluded BRECAN Jog for Life in Ibadan Nigeria which also involved partnership with SHOPRITE and Ibadan North East Local Government. The survey was given to over 100 participants of the Jog for Life event and some noteworthy observations cited included that;
- More than 25% of the women examined did not know about self breast examinatio
- About a quarter of those examined had elevated blood pressure, some of these had been previously diagnosed, but majority did not understand the nature of the disease and the need for compliance with treatment.
- All but few knew about screening mammography but none had been screened by this modality.
The experts delivered recommendations emphasizing the need for more seminars and practical demonstrations for women on breast self examination in addition to the need to engage Goverment’s assistance in subsidising the cost of mammography and encouraging patronage. The revelation of a lack of understanding of common medical conditions like hypentention revealed a critical need to improve on counselling and patient education on common easily treatable issues that can be life treathening if unchecked.
