Biography

Betty Anyanwu-Akerdolu was born on July 20, 1953 to the family of Chief B.U.B (late) and Nneoma Dora Anyanwu (late) in Emeabiam, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. 

She graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nssuka (UNN) with a B.Sc in Zoology in 1977. She obtained her M.Sc Fisheries (major in Aquaculture) from the University of Philippines, Iloilo. 

Academic qualifications in view are Masters in Public Health (MPH) major in Health Promotion and Education from the University of Ibadan and PhD, major in Renewable Energy Application in Aquaculture from the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

After surviving breast cancer in 1997, she established Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) a leading non-governmental and non-profit organization that is involved in creating breast health awareness, providing comprehensive cancer care education, screening for breast and cervical cancer, research, advocacy and financial and psychosocial support for patients. In 2017, she launched a two hundred-million-naira (200 million) crowdfunding project to provide financial aid to indigent breast cancer patients in Nigeria.

She has displayed passion in advancing and promoting literacy in children through programmes such as Reading is fun, Essay competition, Spelling Bee competition. She is also committed to advancing the economic status of women, nurturing the interest of young girls in ICT and Solar Energy technology in order to bridge the gender gap in STEM, developing talents in arts and sports, promotion of improved sanitation in schools and communities.

Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu is a commercial Fish Farmer who also provides consultancy services under the business name Aquatek Farms Ventures. She nurtured her career as a Fisheries expert while working with the Federal Department of Fisheries and retired Voluntarily after 28 years of diligent service. She has won numerous awards locally and internationally in recognition of her commitment to the fight against breast cancer and her commitment to the promotion of the rights and empowerment of the girl child. in Nigeria. She is married to Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and blessed with four children.
