Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria

Our Story

Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is a leading non-governmental, non- religious and non-political organization galvanizing action against breast cancer in Nigeria through sustained Public Education, Patients’ Support, Advocacy and Research.

Our History

BRECAN was founded in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria in 1997 by Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu shortly after surviving from breast cancer. BRECAN is gradually spreading her tentacles to other states of the country. Currently, we are present in five other states; Lagos, Ondo, Imo, Abuja and Bayelsa. Using the online platforms however, BRECAN has been able to cut across all the states in Nigeria and beyond.
Drawing strength from the inspiration and passion of the survival story of the founder, BRECAN is on a mission to eliminate breast cancer as a life threatening disease in Nigeria towards attaining a healthier society. The vision is to build a society where everyone stands the chance to survive breast cancer.

The Pillars
of Our Operations

Public Awareness

Our top priorities is educating women on what they can do to be proactive with their breast health.

Patient Support

The greatest challenge to surviving cancer is cost of treatment and lack of funds.

Research

It is sad that women keep dying from cervical cancer when early detection can save them.

Advocacy

BRECAN’s aggressive advocacy is beginning to post impressive results.

Our Approach

To beat the rising rate of breast cancer deaths in Nigeria, BRECAN is engaging everyone, men and women, the girl-child, market women, trade union leaders, religious and political leaders and law makers, community gatekeepers and the health sector leadership. We are achieving remarkable successes while bracing up for the huge task ahead.

Our Programmes

BRECAN has tremendously improved breast cancer awareness through various strategic programmes like our annual Jog for Life which comes up in the month of October the global breast cancer awareness month, the world cancer day programmes in February, the cancer survivors month of July, etc.

Our world cancer day activities in the month of February includes, outreaches to schools, markets and other public places. BRECAN latches on every international cancer day or month to create more awareness. Albeit every other month in BRECAN witnesses one programme or the other. BRECAN’s successes over the years is deeply entrenched in consistence and unrelenting awareness drive and advocacy.
